It will be interesting to see how Caryl Churchill’s 1982 play Top Girls about Thatcher’s England will stand up nearly thirty years later, but if the theatre-going public of Chichester, where it’s been a sell-out, are anything to go by, it stands up all by itself. Starring Suranne Jones, the dearly departed Karen McDonald of Coronation Street fame, it centres around a women-only dinner party thrown by Marlene to celebrate her promotion at work. The guests just happen to be a gaggle of rich powerful women from history and even myth. It was an instant classic when it was first put on at the Royal Court but, as Edina in Ab Fab was wont to say, we’ll be the judge of that. Buy tickets direct from Trafalgar Studios if you can, as they need the cash.
