The TV: The Night Watch

The Night Watch

If ever there was precedent for The Night Watch being utter ch-ch-cheenius – to quote Chaka Khan – it is the fact that Sarah Waters’ first three novels have all been adapted for the telly screen and we have loved them like our mothers. More so, in the odd case. You know what we’re talking about, right? Tipping The Velvet, Fingersmith and Affinity? All les-tastic with gingham and bonnets akimbo. This time we’re in and around World War II, and our heroines are running a dating agency. Modern! Expect lesbians, slicked-back hair, more slicked-back hair, some genius turns that will make your hair stand on end, and a whole new topic for when you’re nibbling your Kit-Kat over the water-cooler.
So get ready to flick over to telly’s BBC2, 9pm, this Tuesday 12th. And if anyone finds any cheap innuendo in the above body of work then, well, that’s their problem.
