It was originally a novel by James M. Cain, but you’ll know it as an Oscar-winning movie starring Joan Crawford – all clenched jaw and sparkling eyes – as the much put-upon mother of what can only be described as a nasty little bitch. Oh, and it’s Mildred Pierce. It’s a brave move for Far From Heaven director Todd Haynes to attempt a remake – on TV of all places! – but with Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce on board, a bunch of nudity and plenty of acting (sometimes slightly more than is strictly speaking required), it’s a sure-fire winner, will clean up at the Emmys and won’t do anyone’s reputation any harm at all. Whether Winslet can turn in a performance even approaching Joan’s will be debated in gay bars around the world for years to come. See it on Sky Atlantic, Saturday 25th June at 9pm.
