Well, we say ballet just because that’s what it says here but we’ve actually seen this in its home town of Montreal and it’s not ballet as you know it. Maybe it’s dance. The Guardian has called them ‘one of the most influential dance theatre companies in the world,’ so maybe it is dance. Anyway, what it is is… les ballets C de la B (notice those lower cases) and Gardenia, a piece about a bunch of characters operating in and around a real-life drag establishment. In among the queens are a young straight man (who goes down to underwear for those low-brows out there) and a straight woman/mother figure. It’s all very Almodóvar in its way with strange dressing and undressing scenarios, retro songs, bits that seem sad, bits that seem funny, bits where you don’t know what the hell is going on. All very interesting and artsy we’re sure. Catch it at Sadler’s Wells, just this side of Islington from 29th June to 2nd July, which is Pride day.
