Oh, it’s easy to have a pop at film legend Woody Allen. Honestly, you leave your wife for your stepdaughter and all of a sudden you’re jumping through hoops and casting Penelope Cruz to get people to like you.
So, it’s really no surprise that this latest offering should have been shredded – and shredded very finely – by the critics. It’s called You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, it stars a strange melange of Hollywood A-listers (Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts, Antonio Banderas) and British stalwarts (Gemma Jones, Pauline Collins) and deals with the marriage breakdowns and mid-life crises that are as much a part of Woody Allen movies as neurosis, people talking too quickly and (in his earlier work) big, black-rimmed spectacles.
We personally think it’s worth a try. At least a try. A little try can’t hurt.
